Bird photography showing Mulga Parrot flying like an angel

Australia is home to an extraordinary variety of birdlife, with over 800 unique species found across the country. Sadly, many of these birds are now under serious threat.

  • Introduced predators such as cats and foxes kill millions of birds each year. These invasive species pose a major extinction risk to at least 37 native bird species, especially ground-dwelling birds and their eggs.

  • Habitat loss is another leading cause of bird population declines. Urban expansion and land clearing for agriculture have destroyed vital ecosystems such as wetlands, woodlands, and forests—leaving many birds without the environments they need to survive.

  • Climate change is further exacerbating the problem by altering habitats, shifting food sources, and disrupting migration patterns.

Conserving Australia’s birds is critical to preserving our natural heritage. Without meaningful action, many species will continue to decline—or vanish entirely.

You can help. In the Mandurah area, there are many opportunities for community members, volunteers, and citizen scientists to get involved in monitoring local bird populations and supporting threatened species. Your efforts can make a real difference in protecting these special creatures for future generations.
